The actions of the next generation – Youth Climate March
On July 21, the Youth Climate Change March took place in Washington, D.C.. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of the issue of climate change. The march’s participants had many specific purposes in taking part of the event, such as passing climate change legislation or raising awareness to the issue of water levels rising. Regardless, the individuals who participated made sure to show the world that the environment is an important part of lives and its withering state desperately needs humanity’s attention.
The march was organized by Zero Hour, a movement led entirely by the youth. The organization gives resources, training, lesson and much more for young activists like themselves, who want to take action for the issue of climate change.
The issue of climate change has gained more attention due to the visible consequences of it now, as well as the fact that a lot of people do not understand the seriousness of the situation. According to The Verge, about half of Americans do not think that climate change will affect them personally. Therefore, the whole idea of climate change is a psychologically distant problem to most. However, the consequences of climate change may be closer than you think.
According to The Verge, average annual temperatures in the United States have increased 1.8 degrees since 1901. Along with this, cities are enduring the ever-increasing heat, extreme rain has become more frequent, sea levels are rising and forest fires are ever more recurrent.
This march was a strong reminder of how serious climate change is to the modern world.
